Pismo Beach Dunes: Where You Can Actually Drive
Almost everyone calls it Pismo. The park is named Oceano Dunes, the entrance most people use is in Grover Beach, and the beach in front of the town of Pismo Beach is closed to vehicles. Three town names, one stretch of sand. Here is how they fit together, so you end up at the right gate.
The Short Answer
You Cannot Drive on Pismo Beach
The sand you can drive on is Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, a few miles south of the town of Pismo Beach. It is the last beach in California open to street vehicles.
Two entrances, both south of Pismo Beach:
- Grand Avenue, Grover Beach. The northern gate. Firmer sand, closest to town, and where most first timers come in.
- Pier Avenue, Oceano. The southern gate, closer to the camping and the riding. Post 2 sits one mile south of it and marks the start of the OHV area.
Both kiosks run 7 AM to 10 PM. The beach in front of the town of Pismo Beach itself is day use only, no vehicles on the sand.
The Name
Why Everybody Still Says Pismo
Because that is where it started. Pismo Beach is the town nearest the dunes and it is still known as the birthplace of dune buggy culture. Cars began driving this sand in 1905. By the early 1970s it was a full scene, and a Life Magazine photo from July 4, 1971 showed something like 100,000 dune buggy fans packed onto the beach at once.
Oceano Dunes became a California state park in 1974, and State Parks began active SVRA management in 1982. The official name changed. What people call it did not.
So if you were told to meet somebody "at Pismo," you are going to Oceano Dunes. The full history is here.
